My soap box

There's a new movie out, its the "Super-size Me" for Wal-mart. This company which is the largest retailer in the world is exploitive. It's not my purpose to rant, that's not very becoming. However, this Wal-Mart phenomenon really grieves me. It’s not because Wal-Mart epitomizes capitalism, but that they market themselves as pro-family with Christian values and the general Christian public wanting "to be good stewards" buys it hook, line and sinker.

In the States "Fair trade" isn't what it is in Europe. It's not something on the forefront of the general American Christian's mind. It’s only been in recent years that the so-called Christian values of Wal-Mart have fallen under suspicion. This has not been due to all of the court cases they have pending or concern over the working conditions of employees. It's due to policies that were passed by the company that benefited employees that were gay. Siiiiigh. IF the "Christian public" were to begin to care about exploitation I like to imagine on one day all the Christians NOT shopping at Wal-Mart and sending emails saying that we didn't shop today because we want you to change some things. I think there are enough Christians that shop at Wal-Mart regularly enough that it would be felt.
Anyway, somebody made a movie to get the word out. Unfortunately, Wal-Mart is not alone. The Gap, Levis, Old Navy, and many other companies could clean up there act as well, but they don't claim to be Pro-family. If anyone is interested here's the website where you can see a preview of the movie at Move on
A good book on the phenomenon of big companies and globalization is by Naomi Klien called NO LOGO.

yep, corporations scare me. wal-mart came to my town 13 years ago. it had 6 other stores to compete with. now there is only one other store left and it's barely holding on.

i hate wal-mart.

but i love low prices.
