portland.jpgBack before there was MTV, my brother and I would stay up late to watch BBC's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. The story itself was comical, but the low budget, poor quality attempts at special effects was just as entertaining. This tale of the last survivors of Earth (it got blown up to make room for a galatic super highway) has been waiting for cinematic technology & CG to depict what we could only imagine. Thank you George Lucus.

I don't remember that much about the story and never read the book, but I do remember the character with two heads. My brother and I would be in fits of giggles as this actor gave line after line with this dummy head stuck on his shoulder. Often it seemed that the head was about to fall off. I'm sure they had a lot of fun on the sets trying to get through each take.

Now that it's out I'm looking forward to seeing the new movie. It's gotten mixed reviews, but one critic said that Hitchhiker groupies wouldn't be disappointed. So if you've yet to learn the "meaning of the Universe" you should see this flick. Ah yes, they tackle this issue by having a computer the size of a planet crunch the numbers to figure out the ultimate meaning of life.
